CORE COURSES 1. Listening and Speaking: This class provides students an
opportunity to put their knowledge of English to use in a dynamic and active
format. A variety of listening and speaking activities such as dictation,
dialogues, presentations, and problem-solving tasks are used to strengthen
students' ability to successfully communicate in English.
2. Reading and Vocabulary: This class helps students improve
their reading comprehension skills, develop vocabulary, and increase reading
speed. A variety of classroom activities will not only build reading strategies,
but also reenforce other language abilities such as grammar, listening, and
discussion.
3. Writing and Grammar: This class
focuses on the student's ability to clearly and creatively communicate in
written form. Each level contains the appropriate balance of writing and grammar
instruction. Students will learn to organize and develop their ideas on a wide
range of topics using a variety of writing styles.
ELECTIVE
COURSES Each session SLA offers a number of Elective Courses. In most
cases, these classes meet Monday through Thursday for an hour to an hour and a
half each day. The following are descriptions of current SLA
electives.
Computer Lab: This class is designed
to maximize students' listening abilities via multidimensional, interactive
on-line listening exercises.
Everyday English:
This class prepares students with minimum English ability to use English
effectively in basic communicative situations.
Pronunciation/Accent Reduction: This class helps students
pronounce English correctly and get rid of foreign accents due to their first
languages.
Idioms/Slang: This class is designed
to provide students with the idioms, phrasal verbs, and slang used every day in
various contexts; these play important parts in the language of native English
speakers.
Discussion & Seminar: These classes
provide students with experiences in American literature, film, music, customs
and related topics.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Field Trips: Every Friday, as out of the classroom activities,
students go on field trips to various places with their instructors to apply
what they have learned in the classroom in real life situations.
One-on-One Instruction: This lesson is designed to provide
each student with customized individual tutoring as well as with more
opportunities to express his or her ideas freely with a conversation-practice
partner. This individual lesson is one and a half hours each week.
American Culture Experience: Once a month, students have an
opportunity to visit popular cultural places to understand American culture and
enrich their lives.
