(International English Language Testing System) is designed to assess the
language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the
language of communication. IELTS is recognized by universities and employers in
many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and
the United States of America.

- Academic and General Training The Academic Reading and Writing Modules assess whether a
candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an
undergraduate or postgraduate level. Admission toundergraduate and postgraduate
courses should be based on the results of these Modules.
The General Training Reading and Writing Modules are not
designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic
purposes, but emphasise basic survival skills in a broads social and educational
context. General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English
speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work
experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration
purposes to Australia, Canada and New
Zealand. |
2) Characteristics of
each section:
|
- Listening: The Listening test is the
first part of the IELTS examination and takes place at the beginning of the day.
It takes about 30 minutes and consists of four recorded sections, each covering
a different type of language and context. There are 10 questions in each section
and you will be given time to read these questions before you listen to each
part. As you will hear each recording once only, it is very important to
understand exactly what you are being asked to do in each
question.
Section 1: A conversation between two speakers in a social
or semi-official context. Section 2: A talk by a single speaker based on a
non-academic situation. Section 3: A conversation with up to four speakers
based on academic topics or course-related
situations. Section 4: A university-style lecture or
talk. |
|
- Speaking: The test takes the form of a
one-to-one interview. All interviews are recorded on audio cassette. There are
three parts to the Speaking test. These allow you to demonstrate your spoken
English skills through a number of tasks. The whole interview takes between
eleven and fourteen minutes.
Part 1 (Introduction and interview
(4-5minutes)): The candidate has the opportunity to speak on familiar topics.
The examiner asks a number of questions to which the candidate should reply as
fully as possible.
Part 2 (Individual long turn (3-4 minutes)): The
candidate is asked to give a short talk for 1-2 minutes on a topic chosen by the
examiner. The candidate has a minute to prepare and then speaks on the topic
without stopping.
Part 3 (Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes)): The
candidate is presented with more abstract questions broadly linked to the topic
introduced in part 2, and is encouraged to engage in extensive
discussion. |
|
- Reading: The IELTS examination tests
your ability to read between 1500 and 2500 words in a fairly short period of
time in order to find out certain information. The test has three reading
passages and each of the passages is accompanied by a set of questions. There
may be more than one type of question in each set. You are given 60 minutes to
answer a total of 40 questions. |
|
- Writing: The test is divided into two
parts and you are allowed one hour to complete both parts.
Writing Task
1: In the first part, you are given a task based on some graphic or pictorial
information. You are expected to write a descriptive report of at least 150
words on the information provided.
Writing Task 2: The second task is
more demanding. You are expected to produce a written argument on a given topic
and to organize your answer clearly, giving some examples to support your
points. You will have to write at least 250 words and, as Task 2 is longer than
Task 1, you are advised to spend approximately 40 minutes on this task and 20
minutes on the first task. |
